Emergency Lighting Doesn’t End at Installation

For any emergency lighting system, installation is only the beginning.

A system may be correctly designed, specified and commissioned, but its role continues for many years afterwards. Emergency lighting needs to remain ready to operate when required, making ongoing performance, testing, maintenance and product support important considerations throughout its working life.

This means that decisions made at the specification stage should consider more than whether a product meets the immediate requirements of a project. There is also a longer-term question: how will that product perform and be supported once the building is occupied?

During the design and specification of an emergency lighting system, considerable attention is rightly given to factors such as compliance, light levels, product selection and the requirements of the individual building.

However, once the project has been handed over, responsibility shifts towards ensuring the system continues to perform as intended.

Emergency lighting is a life-safety system, and regular testing and maintenance form an important part of keeping it operational. Products therefore need to be considered in the context of their complete working life, rather than simply their performance on the day they are installed.

For building owners, facilities managers and maintenance teams, this can mean considering accessibility for testing and maintenance, ongoing product reliability, availability of technical support and what happens if an issue arises several years into the life of the installation.

Making testing and maintenance part of the conversation

Routine testing is a fundamental part of emergency lighting management, but the way a system is designed and specified can have a significant influence on how straightforward that process becomes.

Considering testing requirements early can help ensure the chosen approach is appropriate for the building and the people responsible for managing it.

This is particularly important across larger or more complex sites, where managing emergency lighting manually can place considerable demands on facilities, property managers and maintenance teams. The testing strategy should therefore be part of the wider system conversation from the outset, rather than something considered after installation.

Considering lifecycle value

Initial product cost will always form part of a project decision, but it does not necessarily provide a complete picture of value.

Product longevity, consistency of performance, maintenance requirements and manufacturer support can all influence the experience of owning and operating an emergency lighting system over a number of years.

A product that continues to perform reliably and is supported throughout its operational life can help reduce unnecessary disruption and provide greater confidence for those responsible for the building.

Warranty provision can also form part of that assessment. At Ventilux, we have extended our standard product warranties from six to eight years, reflecting our confidence in the quality and longevity of our products and providing customers with additional reassurance beyond installation.

Support for the years ahead

The relationship between manufacturer and customer should not necessarily finish when products arrive on site.

Technical questions can arise during installation, commissioning, testing and maintenance, while buildings themselves may change over time. Spaces can be reconfigured, building use can evolve, and systems may need to be adapted accordingly.

Having access to ongoing technical knowledge and product support can therefore be valuable throughout the life of an emergency lighting installation.

At Ventilux, we consider emergency lighting beyond the point of installation. From product development and specification through to testing, maintenance and ongoing support, the aim is to help customers maintain systems that continue to perform when they are needed.
